Odd Directions publishes fiction that moves sideways rather than forward, stories that linger, unsettle, and resist easy classification.

This Substack is run by a curated group of authors. We’re interested in voices with a strong sense of atmosphere, restraint, and intent, rather than polished genre pastiche or trend-driven work. Horror, weird fiction, speculative fiction, psychological unease, and quiet surrealism all have a place here, but labels matter less than execution.

Odd Directions is not an open slush pile. That said, we’re always interested in discovering writers who feel aligned with the project.

What we’re looking for

We’re drawn to fiction that:

• Prioritizes mood, voice, and ideas

• Takes creative risks without relying on gimmicks

• Trusts the reader

• Leaves something unresolved

Both new and previously published writers are welcome, as long as the work fits the tone and ambitions of Odd Directions.
